Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges

Our cosmetic dentist in Sugar Land can fill in lost or missing teeth effectively with dental bridges. These are dental devices that fill a gap in the teeth by using the neighboring teeth as anchors.

Benefits of Bridges

Filling in a gap using a dental bridge prevents the shifting of the remaining teeth. If allowed to move along the gum line, the remaining teeth can create a bite problem (occlusion) and/or issues with the jaw, either of which could result in periodontal disease. Bridges preserve the integrity of the natural teeth and help to maintain an attractive, healthy smile.

Bridge Placement Procedure

A bridge is made up of two or more abutment teeth (crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap) and a pontic, the false tooth or teeth bridging the gap. The pontic can be made of gold, porcelain, alloys, or a combination of these materials. Either natural teeth or dental implants can be used to support the bridge.

To place a dental bridge, the abutment teeth must first be prepared by our Sugar Land dentist near you. They are recontoured by having a portion of the enamel removed in order to make room for the crowns to be placed over them. Impressions of the teeth (and gap) are then made. This will serve as a model for the dental lab where the bridge, pontic, and crowns will be made. A temporary dental bridge will be provided and fitted on in order to protect the exposed teeth and gums until the permanent bridge is ready.

Follow-up Placement

Once the bridge has been created, it will be put into place during a second appointment. It may take a few adjustments over the course of a few visits to get the fit right, but once it is satisfactory, the bridge will be cemented into place.
